Cape Cod Quahog: 11½ weeks of sunshine?

BOURNE — The Cape Cod Quahog didn't need its shadow to predict three months of sunshine — and it didn't need the sun, either.

With rain falling, about 30 Cape residents and business leaders celebrated the first day of summer yesterday at the first Cape Cod Quahog Day, a summer-themed event at the Quahog Republic Waterfront Eatery in Bourne.

Erik Bevans, the restaurant owner and "secretary general" of the Quahog Republic, opened the festivities, intended to rival Punxsutawney, Pa.'s annual Groundhog Day celebration, by announcing the quahog's official summer weather prediction.

"It doesn't seem like it right now, but this year on Cape Cod, we're due for 11½ weeks of sunshine," Bevans said to a mix of hesitant laughter and applause. "Really, 11½ weeks."

The event, sponsored by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, had all the makings of a summer celebration — summer tunes played in the background, while lobsters baked in an open pit on the sand.

Parents and children, some braving the rains in Bermuda shorts and flip-flops, took part in shell toss and limbo contests. But rain kept some of the expected crowds celebrating the birth of summer at home instead of under the festival tent.

"We decided to do this on the first day of summer. I'm not sure that was the best idea," Wendy Northcross, the chamber's chief executive officer, said as she looked out at the rain. "But people are starting to show up. ... Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves."

Northcross and other chamber personnel had considered the idea for years, but they finally moved forward with it this year, starting with a meeting on Groundhog Day, Northcross said.

"Every Groundhog Day that went by, I would stamp my feet, saying, 'We missed another opportunity,'" she said. "But not this year. ... With everything that's been going on, we wanted to make sure people could have some fun."

Organizers hope the event will catch on, and, perhaps, even expand to a weeklong celebration, Northcross said. But next year, they'll try to order better weather, organizers said.

"We're having a great time, but 11½ weeks of sunshine?" Pocasset resident Greg Towers said with a laugh. "I'm not sure that's realistic."

But at least one event planner is betting his life on it. "If (the Cape Cod Quahog) is wrong, we'll cook him up at the end of the season," said Bevans, the restaurant owner. "If he's wrong, somebody could be eating the official quahog by the end of the summer."

Johnny Quahog requests your support June 2nd @ 7:30 PM!

Thank you for everyone who turned out on April 21st, the numbers supporting the Quahog Republic were impressive! As you may know the first meeting will be continued on June 2nd. Once again your support is greatly appreciated and please bring your positive energy and don't encourage negativity.

Johnny Quahog requests your support June 2nd @ 7:30 PM!

Hello friends! I am looking for all the support I can gather for a hearing with the Board of Selectmen in regards to my restaurant, the Quahog Republic. I'm sure some of you have stopped by. Any Help at all is appreciated. This is the deal.

A Hearing with the Board of Selectmen regarding the Quahog Republic will be held April 21st at 7:30 at the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Center, 239 Main St. Buzzards Bay Ma. 02532. The hearing will be to determine whether the licensing board shall modify the hours for the sale of alcoholic beverages, and to determine whether the Entertainment Licenses issued to the Quahog Republic should be modified, suspended or REVOKED.

Pretty Scary stuff my fellow citizens! With our history of concessions to our neighbors and working closely with the association over the past 11 years It is a major concern of mine that any change in license could occur. This directly affect you and your families right to enjoy a local establishment that is run, I believe, with integrity and with in the law. A commercially zoned business with no violations the Quahog Republic hopes to maintain it's rights as a business to operate successfully with in the law. Any change will severely damage our ability to run a successful restaurant. Besides lay offs and loss of tax revenue for the town a truly magical place could be changed for ever.

With the current state of our countries economy the Quahog Republic needs the ability to be versatile when reviewing it's business plan. Again any change will directly affect our ability to be successful.

I ask all our fellow citizens of the Quahog Republic to come out Tuesday June 2nd and express your opinions to the Board of Selectmen. A presence must be felt for the selectmen to understand the communities support of this law abiding local business. You can help by either sending an email or letter to the Board of Selectmen, and or attending the hearing.

I must stress that The Quahog Republic thrives on Positive energy, please be respectful to association members who support any changes to our existing licenses. Let's show the town that citizens of the Quahog Republic are respectful and classy people.
We look forward to all of your support! Spread the word fellow Citizens!

12 day old sporting his Quahog Republic Bib

Hello Johnny,
Thanks so much for a wonderful dinner this past Sunday at the Quahog Republic and the drinks congratulating my husband and I on the birth of our son, Ryan Christopher! It was our first time at the Quahog Republic and it was wonderful, we will be back again real soon! Ryan's first experience at a restaurant was great, we couldn't have picked a better place to introduce him to eating out and relaxing! We bought our son a bib and I have attached a picture of him sporting his Quahog Republic attire, it is as big as he is!!!!
Thanks again, it was great!
